Shonda Rhimeshas found a new creative outlet — dorm organization.
While stepping out to the 2026 Webby Awards in New York City on May 11, theGrey's Anatomycreator, 56, revealed to PEOPLE exclusively that her daughter is preparing to go to college and she's been diving deep into the world of dorm decor.
"My daughter's going off to school, so I have gone down the rabbit hole of dorm organization, which I didn't even know all that stuff existed, but apparently it does," she said, adding that she's discovered "some amazing stuff" in the process.
Rhimes is mom to daughters Harper, 23, Emerson, 12, and Beckett, 11. She welcomed Harper through adoption in 2002. Emerson joined the family through adoption 10 years later, and in 2013, Rhimes welcomed Beckett via surrogacy.
The TV mogul also told PEOPLE how she spent Mother's Day this year.
"I celebrated with my daughters and my sister and her children and my parents," she shared. "So it was, it was three generations of Rhimes women hanging out, and we had an amazing time."
Rhimes previously revealed that she made the decision to start a family after the tragic events of 9/11. In a 2006 conversation forO, The Oprah Magazine, she recalled that she was 32 at the time and had rented a farmhouse in Vermont to “think about my life." The terrorist attacks occurred the very next day.
While watching the tragedy unfold on TV, she reflected on everything she wanted to do, and then went home and hired an adoption attorney.
“Nine months and two days after 9/11, my daughter was born," she said. "I named her after Harper Lee. Now I can't remember what I did with my time before she got here."

Last year, Rhimes opened up about theconversations she had with her familybefore becoming a mom. During an October appearance onCall Her Daddy, she shared that her parents "got on board but had a lot of questions about adoption."
"They had a lot of questions about what that was going to mean and how that was going to be," she explained. "Although in my family, it sort of never mattered how you came into the family. You're just part of the family."
"Surrogacy brought up a lot of questions from my family," Rhimes continued. "That just felt... I mean, I don't think I've to this day, I still haven't had the sperm donor conversation with my father. Do you know what I mean? Like those conversations."
She went on to say that "the minute there's a baby," her whole family is "in love and embraces [them]."
"Our family is really great in that way," she noted. "We're a very big, loud, boisterous family who, like everybody, is super embraced."
Rhimes also admitted on the podcast that she felt like she had to "justify" how she had kids.
"I felt like I had to justify it for people," she said. "And that's ridiculous. At a certain point, I was like, however I decide, you know, it's like nobody puts in the paper like so and so had a baby via C-section. Nobody says this is their C-sectioned child. So how my children came into my family is not the issue."
