The engineer's death came as a "bolt from the blue" to heartbroken relatives[/caption]

He was diagnosed with a bacterial infection and given antibiotics, according to reports in his native Italy.

But the infection spread to his lungs and he developed pneumonia, it was claimed.

When his family had news of the fact he had been hospitalised, his mother Cinzia, father Fabrizio and aunt Marina rushed to Scotland to be at his bedside.

By the time they arrived on May 1, he was already in intensive care.

Initially, the supercar worker, of Bologna, was still lucid and talking, but then his temperature rose alarmingly.

Mauro is said to have passed away on Friday after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage.

Relatives said his death was a "bolt from the blue" and asked for details of his treatment.

His family said that news of his death was an incredible shock as he was one of the healthiest people around, and was rarely ill.

They said that he was in perfect health when he left and would not have gone on holiday if there had been any sign of illness.

The family are demanding to know whether the therapy initially administered to him by the doctors may have negatively influenced the treatment.

A spokesman for the Italian consulate said that paperwork was being drawn up and will be made available on May 7 after which his body could be flown back home and the date for the funeral set.

Mauro who was originally from Stezzano, in the province of Bergamo, graduated with top marks from the Natta Scientific and Technological High School in Bergamo, and he obtained a degree with honours in Mathematical Engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan in 2013.

He then went on to get a Master's degree at the University of Munich and after that a job working for the German carmaker Audi before in 2020 moving to Bologna to work for Lamborghini.

He was passionate about trekking, photography and travel.
