Caps, gowns, appeals and proposals take over Brunswick County

A new gym, potentially a new law impacting the development process and onehot summerlie ahead for Brunswick County residents.

Fromgraduationsto appealing recently approved projects, Brunswick residents are on the move through May hot, heavy and a little sweaty.

Though long walks on the beach may be on most of our minds,Brunswick towns are preparing for hurricane seasonas they enter the final stretch of 2026-2027 municipal budget planning.

Winnabow residents are putting up their dukes as they begin theirrequest for a court review of the Brunswick County Planning Board's decision to approve the Cherrytree residential and commercial development. The complaint stems from alleged errors of law, improper procedures and more.

In addition, State Rep. Charlie Miller and Sen. Bill Rabon filedHouse Bill 1222 and Senate Bill 1079that propose moving all final development decisions to the county board of commissioners.

Here we grow again

Sketch plans show anew shopping center off U.S. 74/76, in front of the Compass Pointecommunity in Leland. Preliminary plans for the 83-acre property state the "Seaward Pointe" shopping center will be anchored by a 50,325-square-foot retail building with seven small shop spaces and four outparcels.

TheO2 Fitness in Leland in the Leland Town Centeris built and residents have been waiting roughly a year for its opening. Though some residents believe the fitness facility will never open, an employee told the StarNews opening plans remain, but the timeline for remains unknown.

The agenda

The Brunswick County Planning Board will have its regular meeting at 4 p.m. today, May 11. Board members will potentially take action on a rezoning request and the proposed Gray Bridge Planned Development. The proposed development consists of 400 single family units on approximately 96.43 acres off Gray Bridge Road and Shell Point Road SW near Shallotte.

Ocean Isle Beach officials meet at 9 a.m. on May 12. Commissioners are expected to discuss the Jink's Creek dredging project, a sketch plan for The Cottages at Ocean Isle Beach, converting low speed vehicle parking back to car parking at Beaufort Street and W. Second Street, and rebidding ABC store expansion.

The city of Southport meets May 14. Several public hearings and discussions about text amendments and the unified ordinance development are on the table.

Please note that elected officials are likely to have additional special meetings, public forums and workshops as they boil down fiscal year 2026-2027 budgets.
