Frances McDormandandJoel Coenhave been a happy family for over four decades.
The power couple — with eightAcademy Awardsbetween them — married on April 1, 1984, a year after they met at her audition for his filmBlood Simple. In 1995, they adopted their son Pedro from Paraguay and raised him out of the spotlight.
"As a mother, you live on the edge of disaster," McDormand told theBelfast Telegraphin 2018. "You just do. I didn't give birth to my son, I met him at 6 months old, but from the minute I held him and smelled him, I knew it was my job to keep him alive."
Although the couple keeps their home life relatively private, the actress has brought Pedro to public events like film festivals and the Oscars afterparty (after she won her second Best Actress trophy).

She revealed in a 2017New York Timesinterview that Pedro, then 24, had become a personal trainer and an occasional grip on Coen's film sets. (As of 2020, he works in public relations.)

She brought Pedro as her plus-one to the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards, and though he might be out of the house, McDormand and Coen are never too far away from their son.
Speaking toVoguein 2020, she revealed that Pedro had inherited her love of fashion.
"It's kind of like a sport for us," she said. "Shopping is what he and I do together."
