Wells toldThe Hollywood Reporterthat the decision to write off Ifeachor's character had more to do with her arc than the actress.
"Look, the show is set at a teaching hospital," he said. "And if you're a fourth-year resident in a teaching hospital, your time there is done at the end of that year ... people don't stay at these hospitals forever."
Wells added that he didn't want to "scare any of the other cast members," but the temporary nature of the hospital "will be part of the evolution" ofThe Pitt.
"We're not committed to doing a year every season as we go on," he explained, "but we can't say that we're going to be true to the medicine and teaching hospitals and maintain the same cast for the entire time."

In a July 2025 Instagram post, the actress reflected on her role as Dr. Collins and thanked the show's fans.
"What a blessing to be a part of this first and foundational season of #ThePitt on @hbomax," Ifeachor captioned a video with photos and clips of her doing press for the series. "It was an absolute privilege to play Dr. Heather Collins in such a groundbreaking season and piece. Thank you to everyone who has watched & supported Season 1 & shared their stories with me."
Following the news of her departure, rumors circled that she was fired over her affiliation with a conservative London church known for performing "gay exorcisms" and that she disapproved of her character's abortion storyline. Her representatives quickly shut down the claims.
"These claims are entirely false," her rep toldThe Mirrorin July 2025. "First, Tracy was not fired. Dr. Heather Collins was simply not written in as a part of Season 2, which is a creative decision that has been confirmed by HBO."
The representative added, "Furthermore, any rumors about Tracy participating in any discrimination through her religion are completely incorrect, defamatory, and hurtful. This gossip could not be further from the truth. She is a woman who leads with love, kindness, and compassion, and as her very gay publicist, I can say that I see this daily, firsthand."

Ifeachor's on-screen ex commented on her departure, tellingDeadlinethat it just came down to the show's storyline.
"I mean, we've all been sort of amused by the speculation about what everybody thinks might be a reason," Wyle told the outlet in July 2025. "But truthfully, we loved the actress. We enjoyed having her with us very much. She's gotten really big and we will miss her."

Fans last saw Dr. Collins in episode 11 of season 1, after a vulnerable conversation with Dr. Robby in which she revealed that she had an abortion while they were together. He sends her home an hour early and tells her to turn off her phone.
In May 2025, Ifeachor spoke about her on-screen romance and said she was "really happy" that their connection made it to the screen.
"It's like when two people should just be able to get it together and be together, but for some reason they just keep missing each other," she said. "The ambulance scene is probably the first time they've had a really honest conversation with each other about everything in the past."
Though fans might be upset that Dr. Collins and Dr. Robby's story is over, Wells said not being able to "play medical melodrama" is one advantage of the show's unique format.
"You're dropping in on people at a specific day and time, so you may discover that somebody's been having a relationship," he toldThe Hollywood Reporter. "And it may be a crisis point in that relationship on that particular day ... This is not where you're going to get your romantic Dr. Ross and Nurse Hathaway story, and it's a bit liberating."
