Melissa McCarthy Brings Physical Comedy to “SNL” as She Marks Her Sixth Time as Host

While hostingSaturday Night Livefor the sixth time on Dec. 6, the 55-year-old actress wore a black velvet jumpsuit and long wavy hairstyle as she set the holiday mood and showed off her "mouth horn" skills during an impressive rendition of "Carol of the Bells."

"We could all use a little Christmas magic. So how about we put a little bit of snow to get us in the holiday mood?" McCarthy remarked during her opening monologue, seconds before a flurry of snow began to fall from the studio ceiling. "This isSNL. Don't be stingy with the snow!"

At her request, theMike & Mollystar was then engulfed in a faux snowstorm. "Okay, that was way too much," she quipped while blowing faux snowflakes out of her mouth.

Moving on to the "mouth horn and piano duet" portion of her monologue, McCarthy was joined bySNLcast memberMarcello Hernandez, who was adorably dressed as one of Santa's elves. During his attempt to push the piano stage onto its dedicated mark, Hernandez, 28, accidentally pulled McCarthy over the piano bench and crushed her hands over the keys as she screamed in pain.

"Now I've ruined Christmas," theGilmore Girlsalum whined while still slumped over the piano, after whichKenan Thompsonresponded, "Oh, nonsense, Melissa McCarthy. Come on, you haven't ruined Christmas at all. Everyone here loves you. Now, why don't we do one of your favorite Christmas songs?"

After she and Thompson, 47, performed another mouth horn duet to close out her opening monologue, McCarthy went on to embody a UPS delivery driver with anger issues, a southern mom engaging in a juicy game of truth or dare, a flamboyant co-creator of the biggest Christmas village in Yonkers, and many more hilarious characters.

In June 2023, theBridesmaidsactressreflected on a character she played during her first time hosting the showin 2011: Linda, the crazed ranch enthusiast. And while reminiscing on the iconic sketch in an interview withEntertainment Weekly, she admitted that she didn't actually gulp down any Hidden Valley Ranch.

"When I think about it, I kinda really love ranch," McCarthy said at the time, noting that they used the probiotic yogurt drink Kefir. "So I don't know that I couldn't have just [drank ranch dressing]… but there's a lot of logistics to that."

To make the character even more iconic, McCarthy revealed that she had created the character for a comedy troupe long before it graced the Studio 8H stage. "At the time, I was like, 'This will be a great idea,' " she toldEW. "And then doing it three times a week, I was like, 'Hmmm, this is difficult to get down the third time.' "
