Eric Dane is publishing a memoir aboutliving with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS, theAssociated Pressreports. The book will hit shelves in 2026.
The 53-year-oldGrey's Anatomyalum's memoir, titledBook of Days: A Memoir in Moments, will be released bythe Open Field, Maria Shriver's imprint through Penguin Random House.
"I wake up every morning, and I'm immediately reminded that this is real — this illness, this challenge, and that's exactly why I'm writing this book," Dane said in a statement provided by Open Field to the AP. "I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that, if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart."
The actor continued, writing, "If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling."
Shriver said in a statement that Dane intended to write the book to make his daughters, whom he has withestranged wife Rebecca Gayheart, "proud." She notes the book "will also help people understand what ALS is and isn't, what happens to someone when they get it, and how we can all be compassionate partners to people suffering with neurological conditions such as this."
TheEuphoriastar went public with his ALS diagnosis in a statement toPeoplein April. At the time, Dane said he was returning to the set of the third season of the long-delayed HBO series, which is set to air in April 2026.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to muscle control issues and eventual muscle atrophy, including in the muscles that control breathing. According to theMayo Clinic, half of all people with ALS die within 14 to 18 months of diagnosis, though some people with the disease live 10 years or longer.
In a Juneinterview with Diane SawyeronGood Morning America, Dane spoke about his early symptoms, which included weakness in his right hand. He told Sawyer that now the right side of his body has "stopped working."
Dane also spoke about his emotions around the illness. "I'm angry because, you know, my father was taken from me when I was young, and now ... there's a very good chance I'm going to be taken from my girls while they're very young," Dane said, referring to his father, whodied from a gunshot woundwhen Dane was 7 years old. "I mean really, at the end of the day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can."
