DOLPHINS are the only animals apart from humans that give themselves names, a zoologist says.

He advised the Immediate Genius podcast: "As they are growing up they make themselves a bit of whistle which is totally different from each different dolphin's whistle.
"This turns into a representation of their identify."
The Cambridge College lecturer, who explores the phenomenon in his new ebook, Why Animals Speak, stated whistles lets others know who's there — which is unsurprising as dolphins stay inside fluid social networks.
Dr Kershenbaum stated these whistles are used to 'broadcast their identities' and 'let others know who is here'.
He stated: "Again, that's not that shocking given this social community that they stay in.
"They should know, who're you? Are you a member of my group? Are you somebody that I have worked with prior to now?
"It is extremely rare, actually it's the only occasion we all know of in the animal world, outdoors of people where animals give themselves a reputation.
"Here they're truly crafting themselves their very own, vocal, illustration that they will use to say 'that is me'."
