A street in Bath might be shut to drivers for six weeks to help local amphibians attain their breeding grounds.

Charlcombe Lane shall be closed until March 25 as toads, frogs, and newts journey throughout the asphalt to succeed in their 'ancestral breeding grounds'.

The street has been closed annually since 2003 in cooperation with Bath and North East Somerset Council.

The Charlcombe Toad Rescue Group may also be patrolling the world to assist the creatures protected as they make their journey.

An estimated 2,500 amphibians will cross the street to succeed in the lake under, the place they may mate and reproduce.

The toads sometimes travel after dusk between February and March, but crossing the street can show to be perilous.

Toad helper Helen Hobbs advised the BBC: 'In Charlcombe they typically grow to be trapped by high stone partitions, so volunteers patrol every evening to move the amphibians to a protected release website to allow them to continue their journey.

'It's estimated that 20 tonnes of toads are killed on roads annually so our group is devoted to doing every part we will to ensure the toad, frog and newt populations at Charlcombe survive.'

Another street in Lincolnshire also closes yearly to help amphibians attain their vacation spot.

The lane in Sleaford typically sees pairs of toads run over because the male hitches a experience on the females again – and on in the future in 2013, greater than 40 pairs of the toads have been discovered lifeless on the street.

The Wildlife Trust Fund explained that widespread toads are found everywhere in the UK: '
Toads are well-known for their mass migrations again to their breeding ponds on the primary warm, damp evenings of the yr, typically round St. Valentine's Day.

'They're found virtually all over the place, apart from Scottish islands, Northern Eire, the Isle of Man, the Isles of Scilly and a lot of the Channel Islands.'
