Jimmy Kimmel Jokes UCLA Women's Basketball Team Should Give Donald Trump a Fake Trophy

Jimmy Kimmel jokes about giving Donald Trump a fake trophy

The UCLA Bruins women’s basketball team appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, following their NCAA championship win. Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, Gabriela Jaquez, and Angela Dugalić discussed their victory alongside head coach Cori Close.

At one point during the interview, host Jimmy Kimmel noted that former US President Barack Obama had congratulated the team before asking if they had heard from Donald Trump as well. In response, Rice confirmed, “We have not.”

Kimmel, who has publicly clashed with Trump in the past, joked, “I’m sure you know he’s busy. Um, he’s in two weeks, you’ll hear from him.” The late-night host seemingly referred to the recent two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran.

Shortly after, Kimmel followed up with another jab at Trump, telling the team, “In the event that you do get invited to the White House and you decide to go to the White House, I have something for you.”

He then brought out a fake NCAA championship trophy for the team and said, “What I want you to do is bring this fake trophy we’ve made to the White House.” Kimmel added, “He’s not going to know. But when you bring a trophy, he sometimes takes it and keeps it for himself. So, this is for you guys to take to the White House. And then you can say, ‘President Trump, we want you to have this.’ And he’ll be so happy. You’ll probably get an endowment, and you’ll be able to keep the real one.”

The UCLA women’s basketball team won the 2026 NCAA championship on April 5, 2026, defeating the South Carolina Gamecocks by 79-51. AlthoughTrump had sent his congratulationsto the Michigan and UConn men’s teams for reaching the NCAA finals, he did not send a similar message to the UCLA and South Carolina women’s teams.

Who is automatically registered for the military draft?

Virtually all male U.S. citizens and immigrants ages 18-25 are required to register for the draft, even those who believe they would be exempt from serving, according to the SSS website. Eligible men will soon be automatically registered for the draft instead of having to sign up manually.

Men who are serving in the military on full-time active duty continuously from ages 18 through 26 do not have to register for the draft. Those who are hospitalized or incarcerated continuously on or before their 18th birthday through age 25 are also exempt. Men who are on non-immigrant visas are exempt, according to the SSS website, as long as they remain on a valid visa up until they turn 26.

The Military Selective Service Act only requires draft registration for men. Women can enlist in active duty combat in order to serve.

What is the military draft age limit?

Eligible men must register within 30 days of their 18th birthday, according to the SSS website. The agencysaidit accepts registrations after that up until a man reaches his 26thbirthday.

Soldiers assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve’s 1st Mission Support Command await clearance to enter a shooting range during a live-fire training exercise at Camp Santiago in Salinas, Puerto Rico, on Jan. 10, 2026.

When does automatic military draft registration take effect?

The agency will implement the switch to automatic registration by December, according to SSSwebsite.

What changed from previous draft rules?

The agency is moving to an automatic registration process, rather than requiring eligible men to sign up manually. According to the SSSwebsite, the change "transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources."

Does this mean there's going to be a military draft?

Thewar and current ceasefire in Iranhas sparked renewed questions about whether the U.S. willenact a military draft.

In a March 8interviewon Fox News, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said bringing back the draft is "not part of the current plan right now," but she added that PresidentDonald Trump"keeps his options on the table."

There is no draft at present and there has not been an active military draft since 1973,according to the SSS.Returning to an active draft would require Congress to amend theMilitary Selective Service Act, according to SSS.

What has Trump said about a military draft?

A USA TODAY reviewof Trump's appearances and interviews in early March indicated he had not commented publicly on the possibility of enacting a draft around that time. But in aSeptember 2024 Truth Socialpost during the campaign, Trump described a vote for his opponent, former Vice PresidentKamala Harris, as a vote for bringing back the draft.

"A VOTE FOR PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP IS A VOTE FOR PROSPERITY & PEACE," Trump wrote.

Philippines opens key coast guard base in the disputed South China Sea

Philippines opens key coast guard base in the disputed South China Sea

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines unveiled a major coast guard base Thursday on an island in theSouth China Seato serve as a "steadfast sentinel of our sovereignty” in a disputed region closely guarded by China’s forces.

Associated Press

Chinese officials did not immediately react to the Philippines' opening of its coast guard district command onThitu Island, which has been occupied by Filipino forces and civilians for decades but is also claimed by Beijing.

Chinese coast guard and other government-linked ships frequently patrol outlying waters off the island, which is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan. Chinese and Filipino forces have had tense but mostly minor confrontations in outlying waters in the past.

In new incidents on Thursday afternoon, the Philippine coast guard accused Chinese forces of firing flares toward its patrol aircraft in what it said was “a clear and deliberate act of bullying” that endangered Filipino personnel over the disputed Subi Reef and Mischief Reef, which are occupied by China.

Philippine coast guard Rear Adm. Jay Tarriela did not immediately provide other details. There was also no immediate reaction from Chinese officials.

China claims virtually the entire South China Sea, a key trade route, despite a2016 arbitration rulingthat invalidated its expansive claims under the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. Beijing did not participate in the arbitration, rejected its outcome and continues to defy it.

Philippine Transport Secretary Giovanni Lopez, Sen. Erwin Tulfo and coast guard commander Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan flew to Thitu to unveil the command in a brief ceremony, which was held to coincide with the country’s Day of Valor commemoration.

“This is a permanent step for us to show that our coast guard is ready to defend our interest in the waters, our fishermen, their livelihood and, most importantly, our sovereignty,” Lopez said.

A marker in the new coast guard building said it was “established as the vanguard and steadfast sentinel of our sovereignty, sovereign rights and maritime jurisdiction.”

The coast guard command will be led by a commodore and backed up by an unspecified number of personnel, patrol ships and aircraft for law enforcement, monitoring, environmental protection and search and rescue. Smaller coast guard outposts would be built on smaller Philippine-occupied outcrops, the coast guard said.

Surrounded by white beaches, the tadpole-shaped Thitu Island is called Pag-asa — Tagalog for hope — by about 400 Filipino villagers. It’s one of nine islands, islets and atolls which have been held by Philippine forces since the 1970s.

More than a decade ago, China started transforming seven disputed reefs into island bases in the Spratlys. Those included Subi Reef, now a major island base with a military-grade runway about 24 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of Thitu island.

“Everyday, our villagers see Chinese coast guard and militia ships all around the island,” MP Albayda, who serves as the vice mayor of the island municipality, told The Associated Press. “This new coast guard district command is a big morale booster for them.”

The Philippines claims the region as its most remote offshore township, under its western island province of Palawan. It encouraged fishing families to relocate there decades ago with incentives such as free rice, to underscore its control over the area.

The 37-hectare (91-acre) island now boasts internet and cellphone connections, a more stable power and water supply, a newly cemented runway, a wharf, grade school, gymnasium and even an evacuation center in times of typhoons. However, Thitu remains a meagre frontier settlement compared to the Chinese-built Subi island.
