Chantel Westguard of Alberta, Canada, was left feeling helpless in the wake of an online scam that devastated her mother's life.

"These people took everything from my mother," Westguard told Global News.

Her mother, Jarmila Westguard, was targeted online for over two years by a man claiming to be a US Army sergeant.

He allegedly told her mother that he loved her and that they could be together if she helped him "escape."

"My mom was the type of woman that if you were good to her — she opened up her heart," said Westguard.

The woman even attempted to send an envelope to the US with $36,000 cash, although the payment was stopped and the 74-year-old was fined.

Banks were notified of Jarmila Westguard's actions, with many cutting her off and her family even institutionalizing her.

Yet, the woman proceeded to send the scammers cash, causing her to go without food and medicine.

She eventually became homeless and was hospitalized, ultimately dying in October last year, days before she was set to leave Ontario and join her daughter.

"She starved herself," said Chantel Westguard. "My mom didn't even look like my mother when she passed away."

In a GoFundMe for her mother, Chantel offered insight into her mother's circumstances that left her vulnerable to the scammers.

She explained that the pandemic triggered fear and mental health issues in her mother, which left her homebound and seeking human interaction through social media.

"Unfortunately, this allowed my mother to be completely vulnerable to some serious scam artists, which led my mother to sell her house and give away over $300,000," she wrote.

FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE

Although the scam and her mother's unfortunate passing broke her, it also gave her the strength to take action, Westguard told Global News.

The daughter tried to "scam the scammers" by impersonating her mother and sending them texts assuring more money would be sent.

The scammers sent Westguard a physical address to send the funds, which she shared with police.

Cops in Illinois went to the address on the text, where a woman was questioned but not arrested.

She claimed she knew nothing about what happened and said she was also a victim.

Police told Westguard that the woman would be investigated for money laundering.

The U.S. Sun reached out to Westguard for comment.

INCREASING SCAMS

Romance and investment scams, known as "pig butchering" scams, have been on the rise, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or CAFC.

As scams become more sophisticated with the use of artificial intelligence, it is important you know how to spot a scam and how to avoid them.

As part of these scams, fraudsters reach out to victims via social media and dating apps, where they develop a relationship and trust with the victim before requesting money.

Some warning signs for this type of fraud include someone professing their love despite not having met you in person or receiving friend requests from profiles that seem too good to be true.

Other signs include receiving requests to show you how to invest via remote access to your device, or investment opportunities with abnormally high return rates.

The CAFC suggested not accepting friend requests, sending money to unknown individuals, or giving out personal or financial information.

A COLES customer has left fellow shoppers stunned after revealing a very simple loophole to receive free ice cream.

The anonymous shopper told of a little known trick that he and his girlfriend have been using to take advantage of a Coles Online policy.

By opting in to receive substitutes when making a home delivery order, the couple have been able to exploit the loophole.

That's because the Australian-based chain offer their alternative product for free if it doesn't suit the demands of the customer.

"Every week I do a Coles Online order," the shopper explained on The Kick It Forward podcast.

"When you order something and it isn't available, they send you an alternative.

"But if you say you're not happy with the alternative they choose for you, you get the item for free."

In order to ensure they get a free alternative each time, the shopper revealed his sneaky trick of choosing something that is guaranteed to be out of stock.

"Recently my girlfriend and I have found a Japanese ice cream which is consistently not available in Australia," he continued.

"But we order it and get sent an alternative, which we say we're not happy with.

"We're now receiving a free tub of ice cream every week."

However, as with most things that appear too good to be true – there's a catch.

While Coles does give credits to shoppers who are unhappy with their substitutes, the supermarket may refuse to do this for "repeat offenders".

According to 7news.com.au, if a customer has repeatedly had a credit applied for a substitute issue within the last three months, a Coles Online agent may prevent any further credits being applied.

Nonetheless, a Coles spokesperson said that the supermarket is happy to provide substitutes to online customers.

"Coles Online encourages customers opt in to receive substitutions so we can replace out of stock items with similar products for their convenience," the spokesperson said.

"If you have chosen to allow substitutions, we'll choose a similar item that is either a different size of the same product or a different brand."

"If we substitute any item you'll be charged the lower of the original or the substitute price. When an item is out of stock you won't be charged for that item."

Following the shopper's reveal, however, social media users were stunned by the hack.

"This is superb. I'm really impressed," one said.

Coles has recently hit the headlines for turning to body cams and hidden cameras as theft continues to rise.

The supermarket chain make this move while the cost of living continues to skyrocket, and customers tight on cash turn to shoplifting.

Aussie shoppers have also vowed to boycott any supermarket that forces them to use a self-checkout line.

Customers are now complaining that too many stores are lowering their level of service and are making the case that they shouldn't have to scan and bag their own groceries.

His music label remembered him as a dedicated father and caring friend[/caption]

The heartwrenching death was captured on camera as the religious event was being live-streamed to fans.

The video shows Henrique walking to the front of the stage to engage with the crowd before appearing to get dizzy.

He then fell backward toward his band, leading attendees to rush to the stage and see what was wrong.

Henrique was raced to a nearby clinic where he was declared dead.

His record label Todah Music said the performer suffered a massive heart attack.

Three weeks before his death, Henrique shared a photo of his one-month-old daughter Zoe.

He and his wife Suilan Barreto celebrated one month with their child by dressing the little girl up in an adorable sheep costume and doing a mini-photoshoot.

The two stood arm in arm while they gazed lovingly at their daughter in the pictures.

Henrique announced her birth in an Instagram post that deemed her a "gift from God."

"The love of our lives was born," he wrote in Portuguese with hospital pictures of his little girl.

"Welcome our daughter, our Zoe! We declare the life of God over you, you will be like the arrow in the archer's hand."

Fans and followers have begun to comment on the posts and share heartbreaking tributes for the gone-too-soon singer.

One person wrote: "May God bless and keep you," as others said they were praying for his widowed wife.

"My God, comfort your wife's heart, only you know how to calm her heart," another person commented in Portuguese.

Henrique's death was confirmed by Todah Music which shared a heartwrenching statement after the collapse.

"There are very difficult situations in life for which we have no explanation," the label wrote on Instagram.

"We just need to understand that the will of God prevails."

The label described Henrique as naturally happy and kind with a strong dedication to his family and child.

The post included a prayer that he would enter into an eternal choir in heaven.

"We have rejoiced so many times together, and now we weep with those who weep," the post reads.

"The Christian music segment is in mourning. The Todah Music family is in mourning.

"Heaven in chorus welcomes an illustrious son: Pedro Henrique! See you soon dear brother!"

Henrique's funeral will be held in his hometown Porto Seguro, Bahia, according to his team.

On Thursday, his single Medley: Levanta / Não Fica Assim / Descendência (Ao Vivo) was posthumously released.

He had posted about it hours before his tragic death.

Henrique launched into the music industry in 2015 after he started posting videos of himself singing on YouTube.

He joined a local band and released an album before going solo in 2019.
